Ecohydraulics

Led by Luiz G.M. Silva

Ecohydraulics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates the approaches of ecology and hydraulics to develop solutions to real-world problems related to the use of water resources. Our ecohydraulics team is developing research at the interface of freshwater ecology, fish behaviour, and hydraulic engineering to mitigate the negative impacts of hydropower plants and other water infrastructure on freshwater resources.

Our research aims to bridge fundamental knowledge gaps in ecohydraulics and to develop applied science related to fish passage, hydropeaking, and habitat modelling. Using world-class hydraulic flumes and image-based approaches, we quantify the fine-scale responses of aquatic organisms to flow alterations and develop technologies for field applications.
